I sat on the front porch with my dad, a little girl crying in fear of the tornado that was obviously headed our way since the warning sirens were blaring. My dad calmed me with his words, “Sister, I’ll take care of you as long as I can, and when I can’t, God will.” Dad made sure to tell me how much he and Mom loved me, and then added, “God, your Heavenly Father, loves you even more!” I trusted my parents and knew they always told me the truth. I was abundantly blessed with two faithful Christian parents who gave me a solid foundation for my beliefs.
Still, along this journey of life, there have been times of doubt. Really, faith is believing in someone and something we cannot see, and faith must grow to become our fact of life. God makes our faith grow by making us more aware of all the times he intervenes on our behalf.
Sitting in our backyard gazebo, one of my precious granddaughters asked me, “Grandma, how do you know?” as we talked about the reality of our awesome God.
I asked her, “Do you believe in love?” She said she did, and I told her, “God is love.” (1 John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.) She has not walked long enough with the Lord yet to understand that, because God loves us, he is constantly caring for us and showing us his love in numerous ways. She is not fully aware of being in his presence always.
God’s actions in our daily lives help our faith to grow. There are times when situations are completely turned around and we absolutely know that only God could have made that happen. There are times of so many blessings that our abundant life amazes us. There are times of hurting so badly we think we can’t survive, and then, like a comforting blanket of love, our Heavenly Father gives us peace – right in the middle of our hurt! Every single time we give God thanks for all he has done and continues to do for us, our faith grows.
However and whenever we begin our Christian walk, accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, our new and untested faith grows stronger as we seek to do God’s will. Our awareness of our Heavenly Father’s love becomes more constant. Our faith continues to grow until the moment we know, for a fact, God is real, Jesus Christ is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit surrounds us every moment of every single day.
II Corinthians 5:7 NIV We live by faith, not by sight.
